Florida's Unique Electrical Challenges
Southwest Florida's environment creates specific electrical hazards. Salt air corrodes electrical connections, particularly in outdoor panels, junction boxes, and any exposed wiring. Lightning is extremely common in Florida — the state leads the nation in lightning strikes — and repeated nearby strikes can damage surge protection devices and create voltage spikes that damage electronics and appliances. High humidity promotes corrosion inside electrical panels and can cause arcing at loose connections.
Homes near the Gulf or saltwater bodies face the most severe corrosion challenges. Electrical panels in these locations should be inspected annually by a licensed electrician, and any signs of corrosion on connections or breakers should be addressed promptly.
Electrical Panel Inspection
Before leaving for the season, inspect your electrical panel (or have a licensed electrician inspect it) for signs of corrosion, burning, or overheating. Look for discoloration around breakers, which can indicate overheating. Check that all breakers are properly seated and that none are in a tripped position. Verify that the panel cover is properly installed and that there are no gaps that could allow moisture or pests to enter.

GFCI Outlets
Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets are required in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor locations. These outlets protect against electrical shock by detecting ground faults and cutting power within milliseconds. Test every GFCI outlet in your home before leaving — press the test button to trip the outlet, then press reset to restore power. A GFCI outlet that does not trip or does not reset properly should be replaced.
Appliance and System Status
Before leaving, unplug all non-essential electronics and appliances. This reduces the risk of electrical fires from appliances that malfunction while unattended and eliminates phantom power consumption. Leave the refrigerator plugged in (set to minimum cooling if you have emptied it) and the HVAC system operating. Consider leaving a few interior lights on timers to give the appearance of occupancy.
Smoke and CO Detectors
Test every smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector in your home before leaving. Replace batteries in any detector that is more than a year old. Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years — check the manufacture date on the back of each unit. Consider installing interconnected smoke detectors that all sound when one is triggered, and smart smoke detectors that send smartphone alerts when activated.
Exterior Electrical Components
Inspect all exterior electrical components: outdoor outlets (verify GFCI protection), landscape lighting, pool and spa electrical systems, and any exterior fixtures. Check that all outdoor outlet covers are in good condition and properly sealed against moisture. Verify that pool and spa electrical systems have been recently inspected by a licensed electrician — pool electrical systems are subject to specific safety requirements and should be inspected annually.
Whole-Home Surge Protection
Florida's frequent lightning storms make whole-home surge protection a worthwhile investment. A surge protector installed at the electrical panel protects all circuits in the home from voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes and utility switching events. These devices typically cost $200 to $400 installed and can protect thousands of dollars in electronics and appliances.
